He retired from the service as a Captain on 4/5/1949 after 51 months of hospitalization and recuperation. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Sharpshooter, and 4 Battle Stars.²²

John Wolfe was born about 1752 and lived about 25 miles north of Winchester in Berkeley Co. West VA at the time of his marriage about 1778 to Catherine Bare. He was known as a "Genteel, sober young man," although neither he nor his wife was educated; neither could read or write. About four months after the marriage, he was present when a murder was committed; the murderer was hanged, and although Wolfe was only a witness, he fled in 1778 to SC and GA for over a year; he then returned and immediately took his wife and child to NC. In the spring of 1788,the family moved to a farm on the south side of the North Fork of the Holston River; they were extremely poor, but on Dec 6 1790, he bought 50 acres where he then lived from John Kearns, and on Nov 14 1796, 150 acres from Dennis Coudry. The land was located at the junction of the river with the TN state line about four miles from Gate City.

John Wolfe was a strict, hard-working and careful farmer and he accumulated a sizable estate worth about $3000 by 1806. He also peddled whiskey in the Clinch River settlements and may have traded horses in KY. He also leased land to Robert Stubblefield. In 1792 his brother-in-law, Peter Bare, lived with him for about four months. After several years, Wolfe's mental condition began to deteriorate as he became increasingly depressed about his part in the murder he had witnessed many years before. He sometimes realized when his fits of depression were coming on and would warn his family to stay away from him. However, according to Joseph Duncan, an employee, "sometimes he would immediately go to drinking and quarreling with his family and at other times he would pass over the course of a night before he would break out so very bad, during which times he and his wife would generally talk Dutch together . . .and he would make all fly"

He threatened his family with physical violence and made many extravagant and scandalous statements about them. His condition became worse after about 1803, when a blackmailer named Stunn came to Wolfe, falsely claiming he had killed Stunn's father; he also claimed to have a warrant for Wolfe's arrest but stated he would accept a horse as the price for not prosecuting. Stunn was arrested but escaped, and after this incident, Wolfe lost interest in his family and property as he became more depressed. Life in the home became increasingly difficult, so that Caty Wolfe sent her daughter Hannah to live with her aunt, Mary Pope in June, 1805, and her son Adam to live with his uncle Charles Wolfe in TN. Wolfe threatened to desert his family, and after a severe emotional attack, he sold his 200 acre farm to John Weaver on Feb 13, 1806, for considerably less than it was worth. He then took his youngest son, Jacob, and went to the Moravian settlement near Winston-Salem, NC, where he apprenticed the boy to a saddler and loaned his money out at interest.

On April 12, 1806, after Wolfe had gone to NC, his sons, Henry and John forced John Weaver to return to them the 200 acre farm; Henry got a patent to the land in 1809. Then on Sept 15 1806, they agreed to furnish their mother the house where she lived, and each year to provide her with half acre of flax land, 50 bushels of Indian corn, 400 pounds of pork, a bushel of salt, eight bushels of wheat, hay or fodder, a half acre of cotton land, fruit, pasture, firewood, three pairs of shoes, and $4.00 cash. About a year later, John Wolfe returned to his family on the Holston and stayed with them about a year. He then lived in the home of Jacob Pepers for about two years and then bought 250 acres on Copper Creek in Russell Co., VA. He hanged himself there in January 1811, and his personal debts were settled and his estate sold in 1816.

The Wolfe family was involved in several lawsuits concerning the property, as Caty and her younger children sought a share in the land that Henry and John Wolfe had acquired from Weaver. It was eventually divided in 1821 among all the heirs.Henry Wolfe sold his mother 137 acres of the farm on Jan 25, 1814 for $500. She sold the land on June 27 1828 to her son-in-law, Abraham Lane, with whom she subsequently made her home until her death about 1835 in Scott Co. VA.¹⁴³ In 1783 he sailed for seven months in stormy seas to the US and landed in Charleston, SC in the spring of 1784.⁹⁵ He moved from Charleston to West Virginia; moved from West Virginia to North Carolina; Moved from North Carolina to the Holston River area.⁹⁵ He acquired 50 acres of land from John Kearns in Washington County along the Tennessee / Virginia line. On November 14, 1796 he purchased 150 acres in the same county from Dennis Condrey. John Wolfe lived on the Kearns property. In 1805, he sold these two tracts to John Weaver and took his son Jacob to North Carolina for his apprenticing.¹⁴⁴

  ABRAHAM LANE AND CATHERINE WOLFE

  Abraham Lane was born at Red Hill, Russell Co, Virginia, on January 18, 1783. This area is now part of Scott Co, Virginia, and located north of Gate City. He was a son of Corbin Lane and Frances Prock who moved from Baltimore Co, Maryland, and Bedford County, Pennsylvania, about 1779-81. He was a grandson of Samuel Lane and Jane Corbin of Baltimore, Maryland. Frances Prock's parents have not been identified, but it is possible that she was part of the Proctor family of Bedford County, Pennsylvania, and/or may be related the the Prock's that lived in Greene Co, Tennessee around 1800. Catherine Wolfe was born in North Carolina on October 3, 1782. The exact site is not known, but it was probably in the Moravian settlement (German) near present day Winston-Salem. Her parents were John Wolfe and Catherine Bar, who married in the northern part of present day West Virginia. Both parents were born in Germany and came to America as young children. The family lived in North Carolina in the 1780s and settled on the North Fork of the Holston River at Holston Springs near present day Yuma in 1789. John Wolfe was quite prosperous, but had a tragic life. After John Wolfe's death in 1811, Catherine Bar Wolfe lived the rest of her life with Abraham Lane. Corbin Lane surveyed 250 acres of land at Red Hill on February 18, 1782, and it was recorded in Lee County, Virginia. He was on the 1781 tax list in Washington County, North Carolina (now Tennessee), and sold 150 acres on a branch of Lick Creek on January 14, 1783. Corbin Lane did not appear on any tax lists in Washington County or Greene County between 1782 and 1786 so he apparently lived on the farm in Red Hill. He appeared again in Greene County, North Carolina (Tennessee) in 1787. Indian raids were a major problem in southwest Virginia at that time, so it is probable that the family left Virginia because of the threat. The Indian problem was eliminated in 1794, and Corbin Lane returned to the farm at Red Hill in 1795. The farm at Red Hill was in the valley north of the present day Red Hill Church; the church is located at the southeast corner of the farm. Abraham Lane started acquiring land in the early 1800s. The exact locations of his early land acquisitions have not been determined, but they are thought to have been in the area between present day Manville Road (Burnt Cabin Branch) and Corbin Lane's land at Red Hill. Abraham and Catherine moved the family to Floyd County, Kentucky, about 1808-1810. He and his brother Samuel appeared in the 1810 Floyd County census, and Joseph T. Lane is known to have been born in Kentucky. But all other children were apparently born in Scott County (then Russell County), Virginia, so the stay in Kentucky was short. After John Wolfe's death in 1811, Abraham and Catherine Lane led the other Wolfe children and filed a lawsuit to get a fair claim of the estate for each of the Wolfe children. By some transactions prior to John Wolfe's death, Henry and John Jr had all of the estate. The Wolfe vs Wolfe court case lasted at least five years in Wytheville, Virginia. As a result, Catherine and the other children got shares of the estate. Interestingly, Abraham Lane's argument was that he was uneducated and unfairly treated by his brothers-in-law, but it was admitted that his wife Catherine was at least moderately educated. Abraham never signed his name but used an "x mark," but his lifelong behavior and prosperity indicated that he was at able to read and calculate - possibly quite well. There is a family legend that the huge oak tree at John Wolfe's grave in the Lane-Wisley Cemetery near Burnt Cabin Branch on Manville Road was planted by Abraham and Catherine Lane after bringing it back with them from Kentucky. The tree is in the white oak family, but seems to be different from other species in Scott County. Corbin Lane died in November, 1816, and willed the 250 acre farm at Red Hill to Abraham Lane. In 1820, Abraham built a 30 foot by 30 foot two story oak log house on the site. It was said to be the largest and finest log house in Scott County, and was located near the springs at the northern part of the valley of the Red Hill farm. In 1841, Abraham sold the Red Hill property to George Vineyard for $1000. By that time, the land consisted of six tracts totaling 500 acres. The Vineyard family at one time used the house as a church meeting place when the Red Hill Church burned. The house burned in 1943 while owned by Oscar and Eva (Lane) Wagner, and was documented at that time by a newspaper story by Professor I. C. Coley. Abraham Lane started acquiring land on Copper Creek in 1828 and by the 1840s he had about 1000 acres there. All land transactions have not been determined, but some of the larger tracts were between his home on Copper Creek and Manville. At one time, he surveyed most of the land on both sides of Copper Creek between his home near the mill dam and Bellamy Church a few miles downstream, but there is no evidence that he actually owned that land. In addition, he owned several tracts totaling about 350 acres on the North Fork, Holston River, that were part of the original John Wolfe estate. In 1836, Abraham Lane build the house on Copper Creek that still is occupied today. The house is on the south side of Copper Creek on the Manville Road near the point where it crosses Copper Creek. The Taylor Cemetery is across Manville Road from the house. There are thought to be about 150 Lane descendants buried in this cemetery, but most graves are unmarked. There are no grave markers for Abraham and Catherine Lane, but it is almost certain that they were buried in this cemetery. Abraham and Catherine had fourteen children, and all lived to be adults. The children and birthdates are known because a Family Bible was maintained; it was lost a few years ago but the family information had been copied. ¹⁴⁸

He was also known as William the Rebel. He Was a follower of Prince Charles Edward Stuart at Culloden Moor during the Jacobite uprising. They were badly defeated and many scottish highlanders and their families were slaughtered or imprisoned. William Lawson was one of many placed in prison in Northern England in / /1746 at Scotland.¹¹³ He immigrated 05/__/1747 to US; Lawson was one of about 200 Scottish rebels who were bound out as apprentices to american plantation owners. He married Katherine Dale (see #99), daughter of Major Edward Dale and Diana Skipwith, on 5/4/1670.¹⁷² He died on 10/22/1700.¹⁷⁵ His estate was probated on 11/14/1700; Property was divided as follows: Wife Catherine to have the home plantation, a negro named Dick, the great table, and one third of the remainder of his personal property; Sons Edward, Thomas Henry (then in England) and John to each have 100 acres of land; son James to have the land left to Henry if he did not return from England. Daughters Elizabeth and Katharine and sons Peter and Joseph had been provided for by their grandfather Dale. Son Thomas to have the home plantation after the death of his mother. The rest of his personal estate to be divided equally among all children.

The estate was valued at 236 pounds and included a parcel of books a silver drinking pot, tankard and twelve silver spoons in addition to the normal furnishings of a plantation.¹⁷⁵
