He left a will WILL OF THOMAS CARTER Russell County, Virginia Will Book 2, Pages 39-40 Executed 25 Oct 1803 In the name of God Amen. I Thomas Carter of Russell County and state of Virginia being sick and weak in body but of sound mind and disposing memory for which I thank God and calling to mind the uncertainty of human life and being desirous to dispose of all such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life I give and bequeath the same in manner following that is to say, After the payment of all my just debts and funeral expenses I leave to my wife Elizabeth Carter one third part of all my estate both real and personal during the time of her natural life and after her decease I give the slaves in her thirds of my estate and their increase to my son Charles Carter & his heirs forever. I also give and bequeath to my son Charles Carter five sixths of the remaining two thirds of my slaves and personal estate and also my (masteal?) on Johnsons Branch to him and his heirs forever. I give and bequeath to my son John Carter the sum of one dollar. I give and bequeath to my son Morgan Carter the sum of one dollar. I give and bequeath to my daughter Rosamond Dickenson one sixth of my slaves and personal estate after my wife has taken out her thirds to her and her heirs forever. I give and bequeath to my daughter Pheby Jones the sum of one dollar. I give and bequeath to my daughter Sally Taylor the sum of one dollar. I give and bequeath to my grandson Thomas Morgan Carter all the tract of land whereon I now live containing upwards of thirteen hundred acres including my wifes thirds after her death together with all the appurtenances thereunto belonging to him and his heirs forever. And I do constitute and appoint my wife Elizabeth Carter executrix and my son in law James Dickenson and my son Charles Carter executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other former wills and testaments by me heretofore made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this thirty first day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and three. Thomas Carter married Elizabeth (?) between 1755 and 1765.2,4 Thomas Carter went to Rye Cove Va. with brothers Joseph & Norris in 1773 at Rye Cove, VA, US.5,2 He held the office of Overseer of Roads in Washington County from 1776-1784. On 05/09/1780 was a Justice in the first court of Russell County. In 1788 he served in the General Assembly representing Russell County.1,2 He aquired was issued a deed for 1,420 acres in Rye Cove of property on 31 March 1783.6,2 He died in 1803 Then in Russell at Rye Cove, VA, US.2,3 His estate was probated on 25 October 1803 at Russell, VA, US; will was probated. He left 1/3 of estate to wife Elizabeth. His son Charles was to have 2/3 of the remaining two thirds of the slaves and other personalty. Daughter Rosamond Dickenson the remainder. Sons John, Morgan and Daughters Phoeby Jones and Sarah Taylor already had their portions. Grandson Thomas Morgan Carter to have 1300 acres of the home place.1,2 |

His estate was probated on 14 November 1700; Property was divided as follows: Wife Catherine to have the home plantation, a negro named Dick, the great table, and one third of the remainder of his personal property; Sons Edward, Thomas Henry (then in England) and John to each have 100 acres of land; son James to have the land left to Henry if he did not return from England. Daughters Elizabeth and Katharine and sons Peter and Joseph had been provided for by their grandfather Dale. Son Thomas to have the home plantation after the death of his mother. The rest of his personal estate to be divided equally among all children. The estate was valued at 236 pounds and included a parcel of books a silver drinking pot, tankard and twelve silver spoons in addition to the normal furnishings of a plantation.8 |

DUFFIELD, Va. - Verda L. Carter, 92, passed away Wednesday (Jan. 7, 2004) at Hillside Manor in Kingsport. She was a lifelong resident of Scott County and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elbert and Mary Eleanor Greear Carter; sister, Eva Carter Stanley; brothers, E.T. Carter, Virgil Carter, and Pridemore Carter. Carter She is survived by her daughter, Mary R. Dossett and husband Larry B., Duffield, Va; grandson, Gregory W. Dossett and wife Danielle, Charlotte, N.C; great-grandsons, Dylan Carter Dossett, Charlotte, N.C., John Tyler Dossett, Charlotte, N.C; nephew, Buford R. Carter, Gate City, Va. Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Colonial Funeral Home in Weber City, Va. Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with Brother Johnny Kendrick officiating. Music will be provided by the Darthula Quartet. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at John Carter Cemetery above Ft. Blackmore, Va. The family will meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Saturday to go in procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
